Steven
Mendelson, self taught photographer and artist was born in
New York City in 1940. As a teenager he loved photography
and in later years traveled Mexico and Europe with camera
in hand.
Steven’s
formal education is chemical engineering. At the age of 29,
after completing part of his PHD, he quit his career and educational
studies for alternative lifestyle and artistic pursuits.
In
Steven’s early twenties, he traveled Mexico and became
enchanted with the culture and charm. He kept returning for
short stays almost every year until 2000 when he discovered
San Miguel de Allende where he has lived ever since expanding
his creative efforts in that culturally rich international
community.
Steven’s
artistic work began with his photography but in 1995 it began
evolving towards painting and a unique style of mixed media
art. He uses his own photographs as the basis to form the
painting either as a single photo or as a collage in which
he uses pieces of his various photographs. The images are
then transformed by using acrylics, oil pastels, pens, pencils,
or crayons. He is a man of the “old world” of
paper, paint, scissors, and glue, no computer imaging is used
for any of his artwork. Steven has expanded his artistic repertoire
by doing original paintings on canvas, paper, and wood panel.
His
works are in private collections internationally including
USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, France, Spain, England, China,
and Australia.
